Several homes flooded in Portland

by May 16th, 2017

All the homes in Bangooby Lane, Manchoniel in Portland are reportedly under water.

However, the affected residents in the over 20 houses, have chosen to stay with relatives, instead of going to shelters.

Parish Disaster Coordinator for Portland, Denise Lewis, told Irie FM News, that although none of the shelters in the parish is open, the shelter managers have been put on alert.

Ms Lewis says, one man was almost washed-away, in the Divers River community, but was rescued.

She says residents of Manchoniel are without electricity, due to fallen utility poles.

And, in Port Antonio, flood waters are receding, from some roadways.

Meantime, several residents of Grants Gate, Rock Hall, Industry and Dumfries in Portland, have been left marooned, following massive landslides.

Speaking with Irie FM News, a resident of Grants Gate, Robert Wilson, says following heavy rains last night, the landslide occurred and several houses have been either damaged, or destroyed.

Another resident, Shelly-Ann McFarlane, said some ten houses were flooded in Grants Gate.

She said a shop in the community was destroyed by the landslide.

In eastern Portland, work teams from the National Works Agency, have been deployed to clear massive landslides, along the Kensington main road, which was blocked earlier today.

There were also reports of flooding in Windsor Forest.
