NWA fast track repairs to damaged bridges

by June 1st, 2017

The National Works Agency (NWA) has fast-tracked designs and will begin repairs to bridges and roadways that were damaged in the recent flood rains.

Today is the start of the hurricane season and the NWA is making preparations to ensure that the nation’s infrastructure can withstand the imminent rains.

Communications Manager at the NWA Stephen Shaw, says the agency will commence rehabilitative works within the next week to shore up the structure of bridges in Clarendon which have been undermined by river action during the recent flood events.

Mr. Shaw explains that the agency is working to repair the structures rather than to replace them, to cut back on costs.

In Clarendon, Mr. Shaw explains that works will be done to repair the Rio Minho bridge.

In St. Thomas, Mr. Shaw says some rehabilitation work will commence on sections of the Sandy Gully next week.

In the meantime, Mr. Shaw says four roadways are still impassable, however the majority have alternative routes.

He adds that there is no alternative route to bypass the Pembrook Hall to Maiden Hall route which is impassable, and the NWA has cut through the embankment to facilitate vehicular traffic.

Mr. Shaw says works are being undertaken to prevent further weakening of the structures and to have normality returned to the lives of residents in the affected areas as soon as possible.
