Police Commissioner to host press conference on crime

by June 13th, 2017

The Police High Command is expected to outline today some of the measures it will take to tame the country’s crime monster.

Police Commissioner George Quallo will host a press conference at his office at 2 this afternoon.  It comes in the wake of concerns from the public and the opposition PNP, about the spike in serious crimes in recent weeks.

The most recent crime wave has hit Clarendon, which recorded several killings including a triple murder.

Opposition spokesman on National Security Peter Bunting has chastised the government for being silent on the crime issue.

He says the murder rate is spiralling out of control with the latest police statistics revealing that 639 murders occurred up to June 10, which is a 19% increase in the number of murders year-to-date compared to 2016.  Mr Bunting notes that the murder rate has accelerated during June, with 68 murders being committed during the first ten days, 54 of these in the last week, at a rate of almost 8 murders per day.
