Commissioner Quallo outlines crime plan

by June 13th, 2017

As part of efforts to drive down crime, and murders in particular, the police will be undertaking several measures including a permanent presence in some communities.

Police Commissioner George Quallo says, the JCF will be pursuing short and medium term strategies to curb crime.

Among these will be curfews, and detention of people for preventative and investigative purposes.

He states that some of these strategies will inconvenience citizens.

The police chief says special attention will be placed on policing initiatives that have worked in the past, such as containment measures that will target gangs and mobile armed criminals.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Quallo says, crime can only be controlled through law enforcement efforts, as violent crimes continue to be a challenge.

Commissioner Quallo says there have been 6 hundred and 28 murders and more than 500 shootings since the start of the year.

He adds that, multiple deaths from single incidents represent a major factor in the increase number in murders.

The Commissioner says, some people killed are not the targets, but are turned on when the intended targets cannot be found.

Mr. Quallo adds that the majority of the killings are not random as 70 % are gang related.

He was speaking at his first press conference today (June 13) .
