Heavy rains lash sections of Manchester and Clarendon

by June 17th, 2017

As heavy rains continue to affect central Jamaica several business places, homes and roadways were affected.

Mayor of Mandeville Donovan Mitchell told Irie FM News that these include the Mandeville Hospital, for which an alternative entrance had to be created as the main entrance was blocked by flooding.

Among other places affected by flooding are a doctor’s office and a restaurant on Ward Avenue.

At least two cars, a van and a truck were disabled in flood waters.

Meantime, Disaster Preparedness Coordinator for Manchester Lajean Powell Rickards says several roadways are inundated.

She says the parish’s disaster mechanism has been activated.

And, about 26 persons are now being housed in a shelter in Clarendon, following flooding due to heavy rains between last night and today.

Mayor of May Pen Winston Maragh says the 26 persons are being housed at the Banks shelter.

He says the 8 other shelters in the parish have been activated but are not yet in use.

These are at Portland Cottage, Rocky Point, Aenon Town, York Town, Water Lane, Rest Housing Scheme, Scotts Pass and at the Bustamante High.

Mr. Maragh says despite the water receding in some areas, flooding is still prevalent in others.
