Health Ministry: it’s NOT cholera

by June 17th, 2017

The Health Ministry is seeking to assure the public that a male patient being monitored for an illness in hospital, is not suffering from cholera.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Winston De La Haye says the patient developed complications from a recent surgery.

The patient reportedly has symptoms of an illness caused by the bacteria, cholera vibrio.

Dr. De La Haye says there is no cause for alarm because it is a single isolated case, which is being managed via quarantine, as would be the expected protocol for any infectious disease.

Dr. De La Haye says the patient has no recent travel history.

He says a sample from the patient has been sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (Carpha) for testing and definitive diagnosis.
