200 Net billing licences issued

by June 20th, 2017

Over 200 net billing licences have been issued since the resumption of the programme, last year.

Energy Minister, Dr. Andrew Wheatley made the disclosure, while responding to questions about the net billing programme in parliament, this afternoon (June 20).

Net billing allows customers who generate excess electricity, to sell the excess to the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS).

Dr. Wheatley says, the Office of the Utilities regulation (OUR) resumed accepting applications under the net billing programme, following the cessation of the pilot programme, until details of a permanent programme were finalized.

Meantime, Opposition Spokesman on Energy, Phillip Paulwell has blasted the minister, Dr. Andrew Wheatley, for failure to meet with the Jamaica Energy Council since February 2016.

The Jamaica Energy Council was established in 2012, to address the country’s energy needs, and to implement the energy policy.

Dr. Wheatley revealed in parliament this afternoon that he has not met with the Jamaica Energy Council, as there is currently a review of its membership.

He adds that other meetings have been taking place with stakeholders regarding energy issues.

In response, Mr. Paulwell says the minister’s admission that the council has not met since February 2016, is shocking.
