“Tek it dung!” protesters call for removal of Garvey bust

by June 25th, 2017

Jamaicans from all walks of life converged on the Papine Square in St. Andrew to call for the bust of Marcus Garvey recently erected at the University of the West Indies to be removed.

Led by Irie’ FM’s Kabu Maat Kheru during the Running African programme, they voiced their displeasure with the bust, stating that it is not a true likeness of Jamaica’s national hero.

The UWI has been the focus of calls for the bust to be removed.

The management of the UWI has indicated that it is willing to have further dialogue on the concerns that many have raised about the bust, this after an initial request was rebuffed.

Retired lecturer of the UWI Professor Carolyn Cooper says she believes that the university has heard the cries and will respond in short order.

There are plans to march around the campus of the University of the West Indies next week if the bust is not removed by the administrators of the university.
