Prof Cooper happy that UWI will remove Garvey bust

by June 26th, 2017

Retired Lecturer at the University of the West Indies Professor Carolyn Cooper is expressing happiness that the University of the West Indies will remove the current bust of Marcus Garvey and replace it with a new one.

This follows a major protest yesterday over the erecting of the bust, which many have heavily criticized as not being a true likeness of Jamaica’s first National Hero.

The call for the Garvey bust to come down was led by Irie FM’s Kabu Maat Kheru.

In an interview with Irie FM News Professor Cooper says, the bust does not represent who Marcus Garvey was, as pioneer of the black race.

Professor Cooper says, the replacement of the bust must be a true replica of the hero.

She says Mr. Garvey was a black icon, and he was proud of his blackness, and his African roots, therefore the bust must represent that.

The bust was unveiled last month at the Faculty of Humanities and Education.

Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education at the UWI, Professor Waibinte Wariboko, is quoted in the media as saying work is underway to erect a new bust of the National Hero.
