It was a golden night for Jamaica at the IAAF Under 18 Championship in Nairobi, Kenya when De’jour Russell and Antonio Watson stormed to victories in their respective events on the third day.

Russell, who was a 4th place finisher at the 2016 World Junior Championship, shattered his own Under 18 record when he captured the 110m hurdles in a new championship mark of 13.04 seconds

Further back, Lu Hao-Hua of Chinese Taipei came through in 13.41 to take the silver medal with bronze going toFrance’s Thomas Wanaverbecq in 13.55.

Watson meanwhile left it late before rallying to snatch the gold in the boys 400m to make it a hat trick of victories by Jamaica at the Under 18 Championships.

Watson clocked a personal best 46.59 seconds to follow victories for compatriots Cristopher Taylor in 2015 and Martin Manley in 2013.

Shaquana Foote (54.05s) took 4th place in the girls 400m behind race winner Barbora Malikova of the Czec Republic who captured the race in 52.74 seconds.

Owain Owens performed well but missed out on a podium finish in the boys’ triple jump final as he finished fifth with a leap of 15.55m. The event won by Jordan Diaz of Cuba with a new under 18 record of 17.30m.

Janique Burger (1.75m) ended 8th in the girls’ high jump which was won by Yaroslava Mahuchikh (1.92 meters) of Ukraine.

Earlier Xavier Nairne booked his spot in the semifinals of the boys’ 200m after clocking 21.59s for second place in his heat.

Jamaica’s medal tally at the championships now stands at 4 (two gold and two bronze).
