World leader Sanique Walker produced another medal for Jamaica at the IAAF U18 World Championship in Nairobi, Kenya when she secured silver in the girls’ 400m hurdles.
The Vere Technical runner, while enjoying a commanding advantage down the home stretch, suffered a dramatic final hurdle mishap and was overhauled by the South African Zeney van der Walt who took the gold in 58.23 seconds. Walker had to settle for second spot in 58.27 seconds.
The drama was not quite yet over for Jamaica as Rovane Williams hit two hurdles lost his rhythm and failed to get among the medals in the men’s 400m hurdles, ending 7th in 55.48 seconds. The event was won by South African Zazini Sokwakhana in 49.27 seconds.
Xavier Nairne, the first Jamaican in action in the afternoon session, failed to make progress to the boys’ 200m semi-finals after finishing 6th in in 21.82s.
Earlier in the morning session Brittany Anderson, Daszay Freeman and the 4x400m mixed relay team all made progress.
Anderson advanced to the next round of the girls’ 100m hurdles after winning her heat in 13.10 seconds, while Freeman was 2nd in her heat in 13.07 seconds, as they advanced with the 2nd and 3rd fastest times.
The mixed relay team of Antonio Watson, Shaquena Foote, Joanne Reid and Tyrese Reid ran 3:25.61 seconds to finish second in their heat behind Kenya who posted 3:24.76 seconds.
