Dr Angella Brown Burke wins SW St Andrew PNP selection exercise

Counting of ballots has just ended in the South West St. Andrew constituency, in the selection exercise to replace Portia Simpson Miller as Member of Parliament.

The contenders, Dr. Angella Brown Burke, and Audrey Smith Facey have both expressed confidence in victory.

Despite a few hiccups, voting was relatively incident free, at the Caribbean Palms Community Centre.

Supporters of the People’s National Party turned-out decked in their traditional orange and yellow colours, but with clear lines of division for Dr. Brown Burke Mrs. Smith Facey.

Voting got underway at 10:00 a.m. and at the close of voting at 4:00 p.m. about 60 percent of the almost one thousand 9 hundred delegates, had cast their ballots.

There were some glitches in the voting process with some spelling discrepancies of delegates names, as well as some delegates turning up without identification.

Former MP for South West  St. Andrew Portia Simpson Miller arrived at noon today (July 30) to cast her vote.

She was accompanied by Dr. Brown Burke, whom Mrs. Simpson Miller has publicly endorsed.

At one point, there was reportedly an altercation involving some supporters of Dr. Brown Burke, who were allegedly barred from entering the polling station.

There have also been allegations of intimidation and vote buying.
