E-Commerce posing difficulty for Customs Agency

by July 30th, 2017

Newly appointed Commissioner of Customs, Velma Rickets-Walker says E-Commerce is making it difficult for officers at ports of entry and exit across the country to detect and prevent counterfeit goods from entering the island.

E-Commerce is the buying and selling of goods and services, over the internet.

These business transactions occur either as business-to-business, business-to-consumer, consumer-to-consumer or consumer-to-business.

Mrs. Ricketts-Walker says it poses a serious threat, as it is used as a point of entry for counterfeit goods.

She says E-Commerce is seen as one of the faster methods for business owners to get their containers through customs around the world.

Mrs. Rickets- Walker was addressing the closing session of the United States Department of Homeland Security and the Intellectual Property Rights Centre Regional Intellectual Property Rights training seminar in Montego Bay on Friday.

She encouraged participants to utilize their knowledge to ensure that their knowledge helps to interrupt the flow of counterfeit goods.

The newly appointed Commissioner of Customs invited intellectual property rights owners to work closely with the Jamaica Customs Agency, to help protect their products.
