JTA rejects Govt wage offer

by August 22nd, 2017

Delegates of the Jamaica Teacher’s Association (JTA) have rejected the initial offer presented to them by the government.

The delegates attending the 53rd Annual Conference in Montego Bay voted unanimously this afternoon, to reject the wage and fringe benefits offer to public school teachers.

They say it’s an insult to the profession and does not equate to the benefits embedded in their 2017-2019 wage claim.

The government began wage talks last Friday and met with the teachers first.

The JTA said after that meeting that the offer from the ministry would be discussed today and a reply sent to the government.

Speaking in an interview with reporters following closed door discussions, newly installed President of the JTA Georgia Waugh- Richards says the claim is far from satisfactory.

The JTA President says the association which represents over 24,000 public schools teachers will submit the teachers’ decision to Finance Minister Audley Shaw.

The group expects to return to the bargaining table within another two weeks.
