JTA still unable to recover millions stolen by former employee

by August 22nd, 2017

The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) says it has not fully recovered millions lost as a result of financial irregularities that rocked the association four years ago.

Secretary General of the JTA Byron Farquharson says no significant progress has been made over the last administrative year to recover the more than $100 m allegedly stolen from the coffers of the JTA by a former accounting officer.

Outlining the progress made for 2016-2017, Mr. Farquharson says JTA lawyers are in court trying to bring closure to matters related to several properties the JTA contends were purchased with the funds taken from the association in the multi- million dollar fraud uncovered in 2013.

Mr. Farquharson adds that the association is still indebted to the legal team as the association has not made any payment following the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
