The West Indies, despite a number of dropped catches, had a successful day in the field picking up all 10 wickets to dismiss England for 258 on Friday’s opening day of the second Test at Headingly.

Ben Stokes, dropped on 9, went on to lead the England batting with an even 100.

He was supported by captain Joe Root who made 59, while they put on 69 for the 5th wicket.

Root who was also dropped while on 8 has now equalled the world record of scoring at least a half century in 12 consecutive Test matches.

Chris Woakes chipped in with 23 while Moeen Ali scored 22, but the remainder of the England batting collapsed in good conditions against impressive fast bowling from Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach.

Gabriel, recalled after missing the opener in Birmingham, snared 4 for 51 while Roach continued his decent form on his return to Test cricket with 4 for 71.

Keiran Powell was then caught by Alastair Cook for 5 off the bowling of James Anderson as the Windies in reply reached 19 for 1 when the day’s play came to an end.

Kraigg Brathwaite on 13 and night-watchman Devendra Bishoo on 1 are the not out batsmen

Scores heading into day two, England 258, West Indies 19 for 1.
