Government is making efforts to locate Jamaicans in countries affected by hurricane Irma, so as to assess their needs.

Speaking in parliament this afternoon (Sept 12) Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been working with various contacts in the affected areas.

He says a delegation will be sent soon, to get a first-hand look at the situation.

Opposition Spokesman on Foreign Affairs Dr. Morais Guy raised concern about Jamaicans in the hurricane ravaged islands, who no longer have a job or a place to live.

In response, Mr. McKenzie says persons who wish to return to Jamaica, will be facilitated, but this process will take some time.

Meantime, Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has urged his fellow parliamentarians to contribute to the hurricane Irma relief fund.

Speaking in parliament this afternoon Mr.McKenzie referred to an account set up at the National Commercial Bank, with account number 212387304.

The funds will be used to assist Caribbean countries affected by Irma.

Meantime, Mr. McKenzie says the relief team from Jamaica, is already providing logistics and other support to the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas.
