England thrash Windies in opening ODI

by September 19th, 2017

Jonny Bairstow struck his maiden One Day International century as helped England cruised to a seven-wicket victory over West Indies in the opening match of their Limited Overs series at Old Trafford.

Set a modest target of 205 in a match reduced to 42 overs per side because of a weather-delayed start, England rushed to 210 for 3 in 30.5 overs with Bairstow unbeaten on 100 from 97 balls.

Ben Stokes, who ended on 23 from 10 deliveries, sealed victory by launching Ashley Nurse over the boundary rope for six.

Earlier Jo Root made 54 while putting on 125 runs for the second wicket with Bairstow before he was bowled by Kesrick Williams.

Williams also removed captain Eoin Morgan for 10 but Stokes joined Bairstow as England cantered home under the lights.

West Indies’ defeat means they will have to go through the qualifying progress for the 2019 World Cup.

Earlier they made a fast start to their innings with Chris Gayle, dropped by Root in the first over, hitting three huge sixes as the visitors reached 45 without loss after five overs.

Gayle reached 34 after four overs but Root made amends when he sprinted full steam to catch him on the boundary for 37.

Shai Hope (35), Marlon Samuels (17) and Jason Mohammed (18) all made confident starts, while Jason Holder’s 41 not out helped them to 204 for 9.

Stokes was England’s most successful bowler with figures of three for 43.

The second match is at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
