Indecom reports 41 % increase in fatal shootings

by September 27th, 2017

The Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) is reporting a 41 % increase in police fatal shootings so far this year, compared to the same period last year.

122 people have been shot and killed so far this year, by members of security forces.

Of the 122 persons, 6 were killed by members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) while the other 116 were fatally shot by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

Assistant Commissioner of the Indecom Hamish Campbell, says  this increase in fatal shootings is unacceptable.

Mr. Campbell says, the nature of these shootings require the high command of the JCF to instil greater discipline, in relation to the use of force policy and its necessity.

He says, some 14 % of people shot and wounded, or killed by police, could have been avoided if basic JCF control was implemented.

He was speaking at a press conference at the agency’s headquarters in Kingston, this afternoon (Sep 27).
