NBA ditches East vs West format for All-Star Game

by October 3rd, 2017

The NBA, in a bold move, has announced a new change to its selection format for the All-Star Game.

The move, which ditches the traditional east versus west match-up, sees two captains selecting the teams without regard to which conferences the players are in.

Under the new format, the players who win the fan vote from each conference will be selected as captains. Last season, LeBron James led fan voting in the Eastern Conference while Stephen Curry was the top in the West.

The new system will enable players from each conference to play against each other and will also allow current teammates to face off.

Five players from each conference will be selected as starters with the fan vote worth 50 percent and player and media vote each worth 25 percent.

Seven reserves for each team will be picked by the head coaches of the respective conferences.

The coaches will be determined the same way as in the past. The coach with the best record two weeks before the game in each conference will get the honor of leading the team selected by the captain of his conference.

Steve Kerr of the Warriors and Brad Stevens of the Celtics are ineligible because they coached last year.

All-Star voting begin on December 25. The 2018 All-Star game is scheduled to take place on February 18 in Los Angeles.
