by October 24th, 2017

Political Ombudsman Donna Parchment Brown says there is no need to stop campaigning activities in South East St. Mary, amidst concerns over violence in the constituency.

The constituency is being contested by Dr. Norman Dunn of the Jamaica Labour Party and Dr. Shane Alexis of the People’s National Party.

The Political Ombudsman, head of Area 2 police ACP Norman Heywood and members of the Peace Management Initiative toured the South East St. Mary constituency today (Oct 24).

Today’s tour of the South East St. Mary constituency was used to determine whether a meeting was needed with the two parties to iron out certain issues.

Mrs. Parchment Brown says following her assessment of the constituency, campaign activities should continue despite concerns that there was tension in some areas.

Mrs. Parchment Brown says her office is pleased with what was seen across the South East St. Mary constituency.

She adds that the interaction between community members and political actors was positive.

Mrs. Parchment Brown notes that there are areas where there some level of tension exists.

She is however expressing hope that these areas remain calm.

In the meantime the Political Ombudsman is expressing disappointment that the political parties have not cleaned up material that defaced sections of south east St. Mary.

She says this was seen in areas such as Enfield where there are green and orange paints along several sections of the community.

Mrs. Parchment Brown says both political parties had given the commitment on Friday that the areas would be cleaned by last Sunday.
