Jail cells at Freeport police station to reopen next week

by November 3rd, 2017

Head of the Area One police, Assistant Commissioner Donovan Graham says the jail cells at the Freeport police station which were closed for almost a year, will be reopened, next week.

Prisoners were removed from the cells in January over health issues.

In an interview with Irie FM News this afternoon (Nov 3) ACP Graham says after fumigation works were carried out at the cells, the area could not be re-occupied immediately as other repairs needed to be done.

The police services branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force reportedly carried out its final inspection of the cells, yesterday.

In the meantime, ACP Graham says the Barnett Street police lockup which is one of the facilities hosting the prisoners from the Freeport station is way over its limit.

The Barnett street police station is reportedly bursting at its seams.

In light of this, Irie FM News has learnt that several justices of the peace and members of the St. James chapter of the lay magistrates association will be visiting the Barnett street police station tomorrow.

In January, the St. James public health department ordered the clean-up of 30 cells and a bathroom at the Freeport police lock up.

Prisoners were then transferred to the Barnett street lock-up, and other holding facilities, across the Area One police division.
