Roadblocks in St James being cleared

The authorities are in the process of clearing several roadblocks mounted along the stretch of roadway from Tucker to Point in St. James.

Residents mounted the blockades, for a second straight day today (Nov 7), pushing for improvement in the road network, and for the provision of potable water.

The massive demonstration saw residents using boulders, downed trees and other debris to cut-off vehicular access.

The fire brigade had to be called in put-out a blaze set by some demonstrators in Tucker.

The National Works Agency cleared sections of the corridor up to friendship, however several other sections remain blocked.

NWA Community Relations Officer for the Western Region, Janel Ricketts, says the efforts of the agency and the police to have the areas cleared have been hampered due to extent of the blockage, and the limited equipment.

Ms. Rickets admits that the roadway has deteriorated overtime, however various forms of intervention have been made to include rehabilitation to the section from Mocho to Arcadia leading to St. Elizabeth, some two years ago.

She says the recent rains have also made a bad situation worse, causing potholes to become larger.

Ms. Ricketts says the roadway is in need of complete repair, however the funding is just not available for such a massive undertaking.

She says overtime, the agency is working section by section to improve the roadway.

The NWA is working to complete the procurement process to complete the worse sections of the roadway from point to garlands.

However, there is no active project in the area.

The massive roadblocks affected the attendance at several schools, and resulted in others closing their doors.
