Director of Elections granted leave to challenge termination of employment

by November 9th, 2017

Director of Elections Orrette Fisher has been granted leave to take the issue of his contract termination, to the Judicial Review Court.

The matter was heard today (Nov 9) by Justice David Batts who granted the application.

Mr. Fisher will go before the Judicial Review Court on January 24 next year.

Fisher is contending that his one-year-contract of employment, which expired on October 31, was illegal.

He says by law, the contract should have been for seven years.

On October 30, Fisher took the issue to the Supreme Court, seeking an injunction.

When the matter came for hearing on October 31, government lawyers indicated that the post will not be filled between November 1 to 30, which allowed Mr. Fisher to remain in the post for an additional month.

Fisher’s attorney, Hugh Wildman says in light of the application granted today, the Director of Elections will remain in the job until the matter is decided on by the Judicial Review Court.
