Alia Atkinson extends her winning streak

Olympic swimmer Alia Atkinson continued her impressive winning streak in the 50metres breaststroke at the global level this season, after she won the event at the Beijing leg of the Fina/Airweave world cup tour today.

Atkinson the fastest and most consistent breaststroke swimmer in the history of the short course world cup, took the gold with a time of 29.57 seconds, about a second off her world record in the event and was the only swimmer in the field to break the 30-second barrier.

Junyang Feng from Fina’s international club grabbed the silver with a time of 30.40 seconds and the bronze went to china’s Ran suo who touched the wall in 30.44 seconds.

It was Atkinson’s fifth consecutive win in the event this season following previous gold medal performances in Moscow, Eindhoven, Hong Kong and Qatar.

Atkinson currently holds the world record of 28.64 seconds in the 50 metres breastroke event.
