Westmoreland police probe 2 fatal shootings

The Westmoreland police say they are following strong leads in relation to two fatal shooting incidents.

In one of the incidents, the licensed firearm of one victim was allegedly stolen by his attackers.

Dead are 26 year old service station attendant Orlando Smith of Amity district and 31 year old businessman Devon Paltie of Three Miles River.

Head of the Westmoreland Police Superintendent, Lansford Salmon, says the police have not yet identified any suspects, but the investigations are on-going.

In the first incident reports are that on Wednesday January 24, armed men opened fire on a taxi as 2 men were about to enter the vehicle, in Amity district.

One of the men was able to escape, while the other was shot several times in the upper body.

The gunmen then fled. The taxi driver managed to drive away and alert the police.

Officers who responded found Smith lying on the roadway with several gunshot wounds.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In the second incident yesterday, January 25, Paltie was at a car wash which he operates in Three Miles River, when armed men entered and opened fire.

Paltie and another man who was standing nearby were shot and wounded.

The gunmen allegedly took Mr. Palties firearm then fled the scene.

The 2 wounded men were taken to hospital where Paltie was pronounced dead and the other man admitted in stable condition.

Paltie’s wife, who was at the premises at the time of the shooting, reportedly fainted and was also taken to hospital for treatment.
