13 persons remain in detention in St James

by February 2nd, 2018

About 13 persons remain in detention in St. James, under the state of emergency.

Inspector Dian Bartley of the Constabulary Communications Unit says, the police have been steadily processing detainees, and once the officers have no interest in them, the persons are released.

Up to January 28, about 33 persons were in custody, to include 9 already charged for several offences such as lottery scamming.

Inspector Bartley says the 13 persons who are still detained, are deemed to have committed various offences.

She says, many of them have been taken to court and remanded.

Among those who have not yet gone to court are the men held recently for breaching the petroleum act, after they were caught with thousands of litres of diesel fuel.

They were expected to face the court on Wednesday. It’s not clear when they will attend court.

Meantime, Inspector Bartley says efforts continue to apprehend men who fled to other parishes, to escape the state of emergency in St. James.

She is appealing to citizens to discontinue the practice of flashing car lights to warn motorists about police check points.

She says the check points are among the measures used by police to capture persons of interest, but this effort is being hampered by motorists who warn others.
