Portmore United advance at CFU Club Championship despite loss

The members of the Portmore United team are breathing a huge sigh of relief after narrowly securing a place in the tier one final of the CFU Club Championship where they join Arnett Gardens who booked their place from Group A.

This despite them going down 1-0 in the final Group B match to bottom of the table Racing FC of Haiti, in the Dominican Republic.

The Shavar Thomas coached Portmore entered Sunday’s encounter top of the table on goal difference and needing a win to guarantee advancing.

They however went through on goal difference above Atlantico FC, of the Dominican Republic, who also finished on 4 points after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Central FC of Trinidad and Tobago. Central advanced as group winners with 6 points.

Portmore United and Central join Group B qualifiers Arnett Gardens and Atlético Pantoja, of the Dominican Republic, in the tier one final.

The winner of the 2018 CONCACAF Caribbean Club Championship will qualify directly to the 2019 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, while the runner-up and third place finishers will qualify for the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF League.

The fourth-place finisher of the Caribbean Club Championship will face the winner of the Caribbean Club Shield in a playoff match to determine the third club that will represent the Caribbean in the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF League, as long as the tier 2 champion complies with the minimum CONCACAF Club Licensing requirements for the CONCACAF League.
