Elaine Thompson lead trio into 60m semis at IAAF World Indoor Games

Rio 2016 Olympics double gold medal winner Elaine Thompson along with Gayon Evans and Remona Burchell all made progress this morning in the women’s 60m on day 2 of the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

Javon Francis also advanced in the men’s 400m while Steven Gayle was 4th in his heat but was disqualified.

Thompson advanced when she placed 2nd in heat two in 7.20 seconds, finishing behind Marie Jose Talou of the Ivory Coast who posted 7.17 seconds.

Evans was third in her heat in 7.33 seconds, while Burchell was timed at 7.19 seconds while finishing 2nd in her heat.

In the men’s 400m Francis placed second in his event in 46.87 seconds while Gayle who was timed at 49.45 seconds for 4th spot in his event is out after all five competitors in the heat were disqualified, including the man that most judges saw as likeliest to take gold, Grenada’s Bralon Taplin.

In the women’s equivalent, Stephanie-Ann McPherson clocked a season best – and third fastest time heading into the semis – 52.18 seconds to win her heat while Tovea Jenkins registered a time of 53.39s to win heat 6.

National champion Kemoy Campbell meanwhile failed to advance after he was disqualified in heat two of the men’s 3000m.

The afternoon session will see Damar Forbes in the men’s long jump, Aisha Praught in the women’s 1500m and Daniel Thomas-Dodd in the women’s shot put.
