Jamaica secured its second medal at IAAF World Indoor Championships

Jamaica secured its second medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham today when Kimberly Williams mined silver in the women’s triple jump.

Williams who was a bronze medal winner at the World Indoors in 2014 in Sopot went one better this time as she secured the runner up spot with a personal best leap of 14.48 meters.

She was edged for the gold medal by Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas who leapt 14.63 meters while Ana Peleitero of Spain took the bronze with 14.40 meters.

The other Jamaica in the field Shaneka Ricketts finished 10th with a leap of 13.93 meters.

Tovea Jenkins produced a career best 52.12 seconds run to place 6th in the final of the women’s 400 meters.

Courtney Oikolo of the United States won the event in 50.55 seconds ahead of teammate Shakima Wimbley and Eilidh Doyle of Great Britain.

Odayne Richards missed out on a medal in the men’s shot put after he placed 11th with a throw of 19.93 meters.  Thomas Walsh of New Zealand took gold with a throw of 22.31 meters ahead of David Strol of Germany and Thomas Stanek of the Czech Republic.

Clive Pullen leapt 16.13 meters which was good enough for 13th place in the men’s triple jump final – the event was won by Will Claye of the United States with a jump registering 17.43 meters.

Meanwhile the Jamaican women’s 4×400 meters team booked their spot in the final after they won their heat in 3 minutes 32.01 – the men’s team did not turn up for their heat.

Natoya Goule did not make progress to the final of the women’s 800 meters after she finished second in her heat in 2 minutes 02.49 seconds and was not among the three fastest losers advancing.

Yesterday shot putter Danielle Thomas Dodd captured Jamaica’s first medal after she hurled a lifetime best and National Indoor record of 19.22 meters for the runner up position behind Anita Marton of Hungary with a world leading throw of 19.62 meters.

Jamaica currently lies 8th on the medals table with two silver .
