Finance Ministry to pay teachers wage increase despite rejection by JTA

by March 7th, 2018

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) says it has been informed by the Finance Ministry, that it intends to pay the first year of the 2017/2019 wage offer, with the March salaries.

This despite the fact that the association rejected the offer at a special conference in Kingston last weekend.

In a release, the teachers association says it is informing its members that the JTA has not agreed to any such payment plan.

It adds that it believes that this move is unprecedented, in light of the fact that the salary negotiation has not been concluded, nor a heads of agreement signed.

The JTA says, if this should happen, it would view it, as tantamount to union busting, and a breach of collective bargaining rights.
