Health Minister renews call for Jamaicans to reduce sugar intake

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton, is renewing his call for Jamaicans to reduce their sugar intake, as obesity related non-communicable diseases, are top health concerns.

This, as the Heart Foundation of Jamaica, the Ministry of Health, along with other stakeholders, conducted a survey last November on obesity prevention, and public opinion.

The survey sought the views of one thousand four hundred and thirty adults, ages 18 to 55 years.

It measured knowledge attitudes, support for government action, and concerns over sugary drinks consumption, among others.

The survey also revealed that Jamaicans want action from the government, to implement policies, to reduce sugary drinks.

Speaking at the presentation of the key findings for the survey this morning, Dr. Tufton pointed-out, that among the non-communicable diseases, hypertension was at the top of the list.

He said the survey revealed, that Jamaicans were very concerned about the health effects of sugary drinks, on their children.

He added, that nearly 80 percent of parents of children under 16 years old, are concerned about the effects of sugary drinks, on their children’s health.
