The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) says it will be seeking international support in its fight with government regarding wage negotiations.

Teachers have rejected government’s offer of a 16% increase over 4 years.

JTA President Georgia Waugh Richards says the teachers will seek assistance from Education International and the International Labour Organization.

Mrs. Waugh Richards says the teachers are adamant, that if the government goes ahead with its plan to pay retroactive monies for the 5 percent increase for year one, in the March salaries, it will not be accepted.

This as the JTA is still in negotiations and no agreement has been signed.

The JTA head says teachers are restive, and feel disrespected by the government.

She was speaking at a press briefing at JTA Headquarters in Kingston yesterday.

She says the JTA is still awaiting a response from government as to resumption of wage talks, following the official rejection of the latest wage offer.

If there is no timely response, the JTA will mobilize systems already in place to respond to the situation.
