Emergency meeting between JTA & Govt delayed

by March 13th, 2018

It appears day three of the industrial action by teachers will take place as planned tomorrow (Mar 14), as an emergency meeting called to end the sick-out, did not materialize.

Majority of the island’s teachers have been off the job since yesterday.

The Labour Ministry called the union representing teachers, and representatives of the finance and education ministries to a conciliatory meeting, however, the Jamaica Teachers Association requested that the meeting be held at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, instead.

In a release, the JTA pointed out, that the notice for the meeting was too short for it to mobilise its team, comprising members of salary and conditions of services committees.

It wrote to the Labour Ministry, requesting that the date for the meeting be moved to tomorrow.

The teachers are locked in a bitter wage battle with the government, which wants them to accept the proposed 16 percent wage increase, although they have rejected the offer.

The education system continues to reel, under the industrial action taken by the island’s public school teachers.

Meanwhile, some schools engaged students in the learning process, despite widespread industrial action by public sector teachers.

Acting Principal at the Ocho Rios High, Leo DaCosta says grade eleven students have been present at school since yesterday, to sit their mock exams.

He says it is expected that normal classes will resume on Thursday.

Meantime, Principal of Cumberland High in Portmore, St. Catherine Darien Henry says although a small number of teachers showed up for work, classes were held.

He says this was done with the best interest of the students in mind.

And, regular classes were held at the Moneague Primary and Junior High in St. Ann today.

Acting Vice Principal, Yvonne Nesbeth says once students turn-up for classes, teachers have to do their job.
