Holland Primary targeted by thieves yet again

by March 19th, 2018

Security measures at Holland Primary School in St. Elizabeth are to be stepped up, after thieves again broke into the school.

The latest incident on the weekend is the second since March, and the fifth time since last October that the school has been broken into.

Parents staged a peaceful protest this morning (Mar 19) over the frequency of the incidents.

Principal of Holland Primary Simone Doctor explains that the Education Ministry approved the additional security measure.

She told Irie FM News that prior to now, the school took action by implementing security measures, inclusive of putting in surveillance cameras, but this has not prevented the break -ins.

On March 1, the thieves stole a number of items, including food for the children.

She says this time, the thieves did not take anything, as they were surprised by security personnel.

Classes continued today, but the canteen operations have been suspended.

There are 260 students and ten teachers at the school.

And one parent, Paul Vassell, says everyone connected to the Holland Primary School is frustrated over the continued targeting of the school by thieves.

The parents staged a peaceful protest at the school gate in Holland Bamboo St. Elizabeth today.

Mr. Vassell says the parents are appealing to the police to come to their aid.

Meantime, Councillor for the Lacovia Division in St. Elizabeth George Powell says residents are questioning why it has taken so long for the police to apprehend those who have been preying on the school.
