by March 22nd, 2018

Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls chalked up their second win in as many games at the Taini Jamison Trophy Netball Tournament in Auckland after notching a 59-51 win over tournament host New Zealand.

They were led by Jhaniele Fowler-Reid who scored a game high 38 goals from 42 attempts. There was support from Shanice Beckford (10/12) and Romelda Aiken (11/12).

The teams battled to a 13-13 tie at the end of the first quarter that saw Fowler-Reid making the best use of her 1.98m height.

The Jamaican midcourt were able to move the ball around quickly and by the second quarter on-route to taking a 30-27 lead at halftime.

Action in the third quarter saw the Silver Ferns battling back to level the scores at 35-35, but the Jamaicans upped their game again to be up 44-41 heading into the final 15-minute period.

The Sunshine Girls then got off to a whirlwind start in the final quarter by reeling off the first seven goals as they stormed to a result which was just their third win over New Zealand in 54 games. The previous wins came in 2002 and 2009.

In the earlier game, Malawi defeated Fiji 67-52, with Malawi goal shoot Mwai Kumwenda scoring 54 goals from 63 attempts.

The Sunshine Girls return to action tonight at midnight (Jamaica time) when they play Malawi Queens while New Zealand take on Fiji.
