David Warner and Steve Smith axed from IPL 2018

by March 28th, 2018

Australian cricketers Steve Smith and David Warner will not be allowed to play in this season’s Indian Premier League for their roles in the pre-meditated plan to tamper with the ball on day three of the third Newlands Test against South Africa.

The latest sanction, which is the most stinging for the duo in a financial sense, comes after they were banned for a year by Cricket Australia.

“The Committee of Administrators (CoA), in consultation with BCCI acting president Mr CK Khanna, IPL chairman Mr Rajeev Shukla and BCCI acting hon. secretary Mr Amitabh Choudhary, has decided to ban Mr Smith and Mr Warner with immediate effect from participation in IPL 2018,” the BCCI said in a statement. “The BCCI hopes that the cricketers participating in the IPL hold the highest regard for the Spirit of Cricket and Code of Conduct for Players and Match Officials.”

Smith and Warner had each stepped down from the captaincy of the Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, respectively, but now will not feature in the lucrative T20 competition altogether

Warner was Hyderabad’s leading batsman in 2017 and guided his side to the title in 2016.

The left-hander is the IPL’s fifth-highest run-scorer and the most prolific overseas batsman in the competition’s 10-year history.

Smith meanwhile led the defunct Rising Pune Supergiants last season and guided his side to the championship decider, where they went down by one run to the Mumbai Indians.

The IPL will allow both franchises to pick a replacement player.
