Over 100 nurses at Cornwall hospital affected by unidentified agents

by April 5th, 2018

The Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ) is to meet with Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton tomorrow, to discuss issues affecting nursing staff at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James.

The hospital has been a cause for concern for patients and staff due to noxious fumes and other issues resulting in illness.

The Health Ministry has indicated that steps are being taken to have the problems addressed.

Plans are in place to remove all patients at the facility by tomorrow, and up to yesterday about 119 patients were still at the multi storey facility.

Its intended that the patients will be relocated to the quadrant on the same compound, as well as to the Falmouth Hospital in Trelawny.

NAJ President Carmen Johnson says over one hundred nurses have complained of being affected by unidentified agents at the health facility.

Ms. Johnson says some of the recommendations made by the NAJ about the situation have been implemented by the Health Ministry but others are yet to be done.

She says the Health Ministry’s response to the NAJ’s concerns was possibly due to the ministry not getting a full understanding of the problem.

Ms. Johnson says it’s hoped that the NAJ will be told during tomorrow’s meeting, how the ministry plans to approach the issues.
