JFF hunts new Reggae Boyz coach as Whitmore resigns

by April 6th, 2018

Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore has resigned as Reggae Boyz interim head coach with immediate effect after months of stalled contract negotiations.

Whitmore, who took over from Winfried Schäfer in October 2016, had delayed signing a permanent contract with the Jamaica Football Federation after being displeased with the terms on offer.

He was to have further discussions with the JFF on Friday regarding the offer but reportedly ran out of patience and decided to walk away from the job after previously giving the federation four weeks to sort out negotiations.

The 45 year old since taking over on an interim basis guided the Reggae Boyz to both the CFU and CONCACAF Gold Cup finals in 2017, where the team lost both games to Curacao and the United States respectively.

Under his guidance the team has risen to 49 on the FIFA/Coca Cola World Rankings.

His last game in charge saw a local based Reggae Boyz squad play to a 1-1 draw with Antigua and Barbuda at Sabina Park.

Whitmore’s resignation means the JFF is now in scramble mode to find replacement with friendly internationals against St Kitts and Nevis Antigua and Barbuda looming on April 26 and 29 respectively.

The team is also due to open its account in the newly formed CONCACAF Nations League against the Cayman Islands on September 2.
