26 medal haul for Jamaica at Commonwealth Games

Jamaica finished second on the track and field medal table at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia, after the nations runners mined 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze in the four relays contested on the penultimate day of the Games.

However on the overall medal table the black green and gold standard bearers finished with 26 medals overall, 7 gold, 9 silver and 10 bronze. Australia finished atop the track and field standings with 30 medals.

The quartet of Stephanie Ann McPherson, Anastasia Leroy, Jenieve Russell and Christine day won the women’s 4×400 meters relay, in 3 minutes 24 seconds flat.

The Jamaicans with Jevaugn Francis on anchor grabbed the bronze in the men’s equivalent in a season best 3 minutes 01.97 seconds with Botswana taking the gold in 3 minutes 01.78, and Bahamas the silver in a season best 3 minutes 01.92.

Earlier the black green and gold standard bearers snatched silver in the women’s ‘s 4×100 meters relay in  45.52 seconds, behind England who won in a national record 42.46 seconds, with Nigeria taking the bronze in 42.75 seconds.

Bronze went to the Jamaican quartet of  Everton Clarke, Oshane Bailey, warren weir and Yohan Blake in the men’s 4×1 in a season 38.35 seconds, the event won by England also in a season best 38.13 seconds, with south Africa second in a national record 38.24 seconds.

In the meantime Jamaica’s sunshine girls will play for the bronze medal against New Zealand in netball action tomorrow, after suffering a narrow 55-56 defeat to England in their semi-final this morning.

Jamaica looked to have gotten the separation they needed to get over the line, winning the first quarter 18-12 to establish a 33-27 lead at half time. However a second half collapse saw England cut the gap to secure the win with virtually the last shot of the game.

For the Jamaicans, Jhaniele Fowler-Reid was immense, scoring 47 goals from 50 attempts, while goal attack Shanice Beckford had eight goals from 9 attempts.

England and Australia will play for gold, after the ‘Aussies beat the silver ferns 65-44 in the other semi-final.

Meanwhile in rugby sevens’ Jamaica’s male team lost the two opening games, going down 38-5 to England in the opening game, before losing 32-5 to Australia in their second game.

In wrestling Jamaica’s Kevin Wallen was eliminated in the quarter-final after winning his first contest against Rashji Mackey of Bahamas, Wallen later lost to Canadian alexander Moore.
