4th man charged for scamming Police Commissioner

The police continue to urge credit card holders to make regular checks on their transactions, even has investigators make another arrest in a scam which saw the credit card of the Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson being cloned.

Investigators are reporting the fraudulent use of over one million dollars from the card.

The latest to be arrested is 23 year old Customer Service Representative Geovaughne Gillings, of Redcam Crescent Fairview, Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

He has been charged with conspiracy and possession of identity information.

Gillings was arrested last Friday, April 13, at his workplace on Constant Spring Road, in St. Andrew.

The police say, detectives discovered that Gillings used his position to access persons’ account information and shared it with others  who  used the data to produce duplicates of the bank cards of unsuspecting victims.

The duplicate cards were then used to conduct various transactions.

Three other persons have been arrested and charged in the probe.

44 year old Earl Hobbins, a businessman of Lincoln Crescent, Kingston 5 has been charged with conspiracy to defraud and causing money to be paid out by means of forged document.

19 year old Annessa Currie, of Windward Road, Kingston 2 has been charged with: conspiracy to defraud, forgery, uttering forged documents and obtaining goods by false pretence.

35 year old Conrey Hanson, a bank teller of Deanery Avenue, Kingston 3 has been charged with conspiracy to defraud and unlawful possession of identity information

Hobbins and Hanson were offered bail when they appeared in the Kingston and St. Andrew parish court.

Hobbins is to return to court on Tuesday, May 1, while Hanson is set to reappear in court on Monday, April 30.

The probe began on February 22 when Major General Anderson’s credit card was cloned and fraudulently used over a seven hour period, while he was in a meeting.

On realizing the unauthorized access of his credit card, Major General Anderson immediately reported the matter and an investigation was launched.

Police say intense investigation by the detectives revealed what’s being described as a multi-level conspiracy involving the four.

The police are reminding card holders to use the electronic platforms provided by the various financial institutions to make regular checks on transactions on their accounts.

Persons are also being reminded that these platforms can be accessed at any time and there is no need to await a monthly statement to be abreast of what is happening with their accounts.
