Opposition PNP files suit against NIDS

by May 8th, 2018

The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court, against the National Identification Registration Act.

According to PNP President Dr. Peter Phillips, 12 sections and 2 schedules of the NIDS Act, are in breach of the  rights of citizens.

He notes that the party is seeking an order that sections of the legislation be deemed null and void and be struck-down.

He says the act was rushed and not developed properly.

The main argument is that sections of the act are intrusive, have ground for discrimination, and go against the data protection act.

Meantime, General Secretary Julian Robinson says although the Data Protection Act is before the joint select committee, there are aspects of the NIDS Act that will go against it.

Both men were speaking at a press conference, at the PNP Headquarters, this morning (May 8).

General Secretary Julian Robinson is the claimant in the case against the government of Jamaica.

The PNP is being represented by 4 attorneys.
