Reggae Girls off to a flying start in opening game of World Cup qualifying tournament

Striker Khadijah Shaw scored a whopping six goals on Wednesday to guide Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz to a massive 13-0 drubbing of Guadeloupe in their opening game of the Caribbean zone World Cup qualifying tournament at the Sylvio Cator Stadium in Haiti.

Shaw’s goals came in the 4th, 37th, 42nd, 45th, 62nd and 73rd minutes. Scoring braces for Jamaica were Dominique Bond-Flasza (43rd, 71st) and Giselle Washington (61st, 79th).

There were single strikes from Deneisha Blackwood (23rd), Konya Plummer (32rd) and Kevena Reid (83rd).

The emphatic performance puts the Reggae Girlz in the lead over tournament hosts Haiti on goal difference in Group B.

The Haitians meanwhile beat Martinique 2-0 in an all-French showdown courtesy of goals by Donya Salomon-Ali (3rd minute) and Batcheba Louis (15th).

The Jamaicans will next face Martinique on Friday before playing Haiti in their final game on Sunday.

Over in Group A, which is being staged in the Dominican Republic, leaders Cuba played to a 2-2 draw with second place Puerto Rico while Aruba got by Anguilla 2-1.

The winners of the five CCWQ groups will advance to the final round of the Caribbean qualifiers to be held from August 25 to September 2.

The top three teams from the final round will qualify for the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship October 4-17.
