Drop In Centre opens in Ocho Rios

by May 11th, 2018

Minister of Local Government Desmond McKenzie says the creation of drop-in centres for the homeless and mentally ill, will help to ease the pressure off hospitals, making more beds available for patients.

The minister made the comment at the official opening of the country’s first government operated drop-in centre in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, this morning (May 11).

The centre will cater to the needs of the homeless and less fortunate by providing cooked meals, a place to shower and change clothes, and to receive medication.

Mr. McKenzie says with the drop-in centre, there will be more space at hospitals.

The minister insists there should also be beds at the drop-in centre.

Mr. McKenzie says efforts are underway to get other drop in centres, up and running.

The minister lauded the support of the private sector and the government’s poor relief department, for getting the initiative off the ground.

Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay, Michael Belnavis says, it will cost about $50,000 weekly, to operate the long awaited drop in centre.

The construction of the centre in Ocho Rios cost some $15,000.

In the meantime, the minster says poor relief officers are undergoing advance training in human services to improve their profession, and provide additional support to the individuals who need it.
