Michigan State University agrees to pay $500M to settle Nassar claims

by May 16th, 2018

Michigan State University has agreed to pay $500 million dollars to settle claims by gymnasts who were abused by ex-team doctor Larry Nassar.

The deal was announced by a California law firm representing 332 victims of the 54 year old Nasser, who assaulted women and girls under the guise of medical treatment at his Michigan State office, building an international reputation while working at the same time for USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians.

It surpasses the $109 million paid by Penn State University to settle claims by at least 35 people who accused assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky of sexual abuse, though the Nassar deal involves far more victims.

The deal does not include any non-disclosure or confidentiality agreements and also does not address allegations against other groups for which Nasser worked.

According to the lawyers, $425 million will be paid to the claimants, with another $75 million to be set aside for any future allegations.

It’s not clear how much each victim will receive, although the money will not be divided equally. It’s also unclear where the money will come from.

Nassar who is currently being held in federal jail is serving a 60-year sentence for child pornography.

If he is ever released he faces up to 175 years in state jail for sexual assault.
