Members of staff at the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) have gotten an increase in salary, effective May 1.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie made the revelation during his contribution to the sectoral debate in parliament this afternoon (May 16).

Mr. McKenzie noted that a recent review of operations at the authority highlighted low wages

In the meantime, the minster says the authority has corrected what he calls a longstanding, painful wrong that was a feature of employment conditions, to workers over age 60.

Mr. McKenzie states that a programme was carried out last year to find workers who already retired or relatives of those who died.

The minister says $45.7 m in ex-gratia payment, was paid out to the affected workers or relatives.
