Legal Aid assigns lawyers to teens accused of killing Bog Walk High student

by May 18th, 2018

The Legal Aid Council says 3 of the 4 teenagers, held in relation to the stabbing death of a male student of the Bog Walk High school in St. Catherine, have been assigned lawyers.

A statement from the council says lawyers have been assigned to the 14 year old, as well as, 2 other teenagers.

It’s not clear, if the fourth accused has legal representation.

There are conflicting reports as to charges.

The statement from the Legal Aid Council this afternoon (May 18), says the 3 teens it represents, have been charged in relation to the death of 16-year-old Kavaughn Barnes.

They have also been charged in relation to the wounding of another teenager during the same incident.

However, Head of Operations for the St. Catherine North Division, Superintendent Ralsford Hardie, says none of the 4 suspects has been charged as yet.

Superintendent Hardie told Irie FM News that the boys are still undergoing question and answer sessions, and it’s expected that they will be charged by tomorrow.

The statement from the council says attorney-at-law Saharee Smith has been assigned to represent the minor, while attorneys Michael Hayles and Cardena Clarke represent the 2 teen boys.

The assignment of attorneys for legal aid follows the council’s request for the charged minor to be held at a suitable facility, as well as a later request for medical attention for one of the detainees who has a head injury and is suffering from eye discomfort.

The boys and their lawyers have been present at their question and answer sessions, the first of which took place yesterday.

The council says lawyers assigned will represent all accused charged at the parish court, and later the circuit court stages of the trial.

Senior counsel is assigned in keeping with the Legal Aid Council’s policy regarding murder and manslaughter trial matters.

Reports are that on Monday May 14, Barnes and another teen were walking along the roadway in the Bog Walk community, when they were attacked by a group of boys, one of whom allegedly used a knife to stab them.

Both wounded teens were assisted to the hospital, where Barnes was pronounced dead and the other boy admitted.

Police say the stabbing stemmed from a dispute at the school.

On the day of the incident, the 14 year old suspect had been sent home for violent behaviour.
