The upcoming three Test series between the West Indies and Sri Lanka looks set to be reduced to a two match affair with One Day Internationals replacing one of the Test encounters.
The revelation has come from Sri Lanka Cricket who announced on Saturday that a week before the team’s departure for the Caribbean, they have been informed by Cricket West Indies that financial constraints may force a change to the itinerary.
The teams were due to play three Tests matches including the Caribbean’s first day-night Test in this series.
Hosting Test matches against Sri Lanka incurs a loss for CWI.
A three-Test series in 2013 had also been scrapped, in favour of an ODI tri-series featuring India, on that occasion.
Both teams have small home audiences and the operational expenses outweigh the money earned from broadcast and sponsorship deals. Limited-overs games, meanwhile, are more attractive to broadcasters and are less expensive to host.
Sri Lanka’s tour of the Caribbean was set to start with a three-day practice match starting on May 30 in Trinidad. The first Test was scheduled for June 6.
