Several schools get access ramps as part of Labour Day activities

Several schools across the island today ( May 23) got a much needed facelift, in addition to the construction of access ramps for disabled persons, as part of activities for Labour Day.

Labour Day 2018 is being held under the theme “Ramp it up… Fix it up.”

Citizens joined hands with government officials, representatives from private companies and civic groups, to carry out various projects today.

Over in western Jamaica, Custos of Hanover David Stair says residents turned out in their numbers at the Kingsvale Medical Centre and at the Old Steamer Beach.

Meantime in St. James, Mayor of Montego Bay Homer Davis expressed appreciation to the people who came out to work on various projects across the parish today, especially at the type 5 clinic in Montego Bay.

And, in Westmoreland Mayor of Savanna La Mar Bertel Moore says scores of residents lent a helping hand at the parish project, at the Little London post office.

In the meantime, Mayor of May Pen Winston Maragh says among the many Labour Day projects undertaken today is the building of a home for a poor man in the Rock River community.

This in addition to the parish project at the Sandy Bay Heath centre, where a ramp was built and the facility spruced up.

And over in St. Catherine, the Bermaddy Basic School in Treadways, received a facelift and improvement to its walkway from the Jamaica North-South Highway Company.

Administrative and Human Resources Manager at JNSHC, Diana Farquharson says the company wants to build good relations with the community, with a focus on children and education.

One of two national Labour Day projects this year is at the St. Ann’s Bay  infant school in St. Ann.

Work begun this morning at the school where plans are in place to give the school a new look.

Already soldiers and students from the Caribbean Maritime University are on the scene.

The other major project is the St. Ann parish project, which is the renovation of the Principal’s Cottage at the Free Hill all age school, organised by the St. Ann Municipal Corporation.

The facility will be transformed into a skills training centre.

Other projects across the parish include the building of a bus shed in Clampstead Lime Hall   and in Cave Valley the residents will be constructing a concrete base to facilitate the placement of garbage skips.

And a number of preparatory schools in Ocho Rios St. Ann have come together for a Labour Day project to remove garbage from sections of the town to help rid the area of rats.

Environment Club Coordinator at Marjam Prep Gail Spencer says the school is hosting a garbage control advocacy campaign in partnership with Jamaica Environment Trust.

Meantime, Labour Day activities are on in full swing in Portland with 83 registered projects taking place.

There are forty-six registered projects in east Portland to include the parish project which is the Manchioneal dental clinic where a wheelchair ramp is being built. The facility will also be given a facelift

The Port Antonio fire station will also be painted.

Meanwhile, over in west Portland there are 37 registered projects among them the painting of several schools to include Skibo Primary, Windsor Castle all age and the St. Margaret’s Bay basic school.
