Fire Brigade to seek sponsorship to equip children’s homes with fire safety devices

by May 27th, 2018

The Fire Brigade says it will be seeking sponsorship for a programme that is aimed at having all children’s homes equipped with fire safety devices.

The brigade is on a campaign to prevent any more deadly fires at children’s homes, following some recent incidents.

The brigade says over the past 5 years, 31 children were killed in house fires.

Chief Fire Prevention Officer Floyd McLean says the need to have all the homes fulfil the fire safety requirements, was discussed with the Child Protection and Family Services Agency.

Mr. McLean adds that the theme of the campaign “Jamaica’s future is on fire, mek we fix it” speaks to the need to change the attitude of citizens towards fire safety.

He is urging persons who live in poor conditions and who are tempted to use naked light, to instead seek help from social groups, churches and other agencies, in getting electricity or flashlights.
